Boyfriend Herpes II negative, I`m Herpes II gray zone

Hello @EnidS and welcome to the website, we can help out a lot here.

I think it is best to start with your boyfriend. His results confirm that he in all likelihood has an oral HSV-1 infection from his childhood. He is negative for HSV-2. The values on his test are very normal. I do point out though that the IgM testing is far from credible for any adult. It just doesn't produce results that mean a great deal. There are so many positives that are false.

If we then move to your first test, this confirms that you in all likelihood have no type of herpes (out of 1 or 2) before you started the relationship with your boyfriend.

What this means is that there is a risk that you may contract herpes (type HSV-1) on your lips from kissing your boyfriend or on your genitals from your boyfriend giving you oral sex. Did you receive oral sex in the week leading into the outbreak commencing?

Your testing 6 months later for IgG is a clear negative. This means that you most probably were not infected with herpes 6 months ago and were misdiagnosed visually. This happens quite often, over 25% of the time.

I'd have to say that it is very common with new sexual partners for vaginal bacterial and yeast issues to arise... the ecosystem down there comes in for a bit of a shock as you both bring your bodies together!

The reality is though, that you remain at risk with this partner of contracting HSV-1. But this would be the case with over 70% of possible partners. What can practically be down. Well your partner simply needs to ensure his lips feel great and look great before kissing and oral sex. If he senses anything amiss, best to abstain. This includes sores, dryness and chafing or if he has a cold for example.

Following this golden rule makes the chances of transmission very low. I can only encourage you to then put it all out of your mind and enjoy life, especially the sex!

Thank you so much for your help!!!!!! I miss wrote, my last result was IGG Herpes II 10.59, which falls in the gray zone. Do you think I should take the blood test again?

No, no need to retest. The HSV-2 IgG is negative at 6 months. That is conclusive that you were not infected 6 months ago.

The IgM is of no credibility, and meaningless against the IgG result.

Thanks @Lili!!! Yes, my IGG falls in the gray zone (reference values between 9 and 11). The strange thing is that my only partner has a negative herpes II blood test. Last month I got two bumps near my vaginal area and though it was an Herpes outbreak, so I took valtrex for 5 days.  If I get and outbreak (or similar) I will go to the gynecologist immediately to get them swabbed.

No hang on!!!!

It is your IgM that is 10.59 and the IgG is 3.28.

Nothing puts the 'M' into Misdiagnosis like IgM!! This result has no diagnostic credibility.

The IgG is a clear negative at 3.28. Note that a Herpeselect has not been taken here. The equivalent result is about 0.3 on a Herpeselect.

You have had one sexual partner, he is negative for HSV-2 (clear negative) and you've had two IgG tests now for HSV-2 including at 6 months post episodes of concern. There is no question that your situation and testing is definitive in the sense of not having HSV-2.
