Trouble getting diagnosed?

Hello herpsters,

I am wondering if anyone else has had any trouble getting diagnosed? I’ve had symptoms since early December (discoloration on penis and itchy scrotum) that just seem to get worse. I’ve been to my PCP 3 times, a dermatologist once and a urologist twice and all seem to think it’s something else. And the blood tests (igg and igm) come back negative.

The reason I think I have herpes is because my symptoms (tingling, pain, and itching) are exacerbated by arginine.

Months after treating my alleged jock itch with a steroid cream I developed a small lesion on my penis the morning after intercourse. I applied this Man 1 Man Oil lotion thinking it was a dry spot and then over the course of two weeks I had lesions all over my penis and scrotum. It turns out one of the main ingredients of the lotion was arginine.

That was when I went to the Derm and she said it was eczema where I was prescribed another steroid cream.  Fast forward two months and I have symptoms again that appeared following the use of a lotion on my genitals that also turned out to have arginine in it (I need to start reading labels before I use things) and have since had Pain and redness on my genitals on and off for the past month.

All of this has been accompanied by a sore throat that seems to get worse when I eat foods with arginine in it (nuts oats coconuts etc.)

I have had tests for all sorts of other STDs and they have been negative, I just really wanna figure out what’s wrong (get diagnosed with a type of HSV) and get treated    My PCP won’t prescribe an antiviral until my blood tests say I’m positive. So until then I’m stuck with general discomfort.

Just wanted to know if anyone else has had such trouble figuring out what’s up. Thanks for reading.

TLDR: I can’t get medicine until I’m diagnosed via blood test or swab despite having recurring symptoms.

I think to start with you need to focus on the true symptoms of herpes. What you describe is not related to herpes without the lesions present.

There is also no known evidence that arginine aggravates herpes. Even evidence that lysine has a positive impact has been discredited.

Your blood testing is negative.

All this means it is fruitless to continue to think you have herpes.

Return to the dermatologist and continue to work through issues.

Hello,

sorry for the misunderstanding, but I did mention I had lesions or red circular patches that developed and continued to get worse after the use of lotion with arginine in it. I just haven’t had too many of the white bump clusters that is the typical presentation of HSV

I’m not so much worried I have it, I’m just more worried about passing it to my gf.

I will get blood tested again in a few months hopefully for a solid confirmation. All I know is Something is up and I have genital discomfort exacerbated by foods and lotions with arginine. (Dryness, redness, itching, tingling, tenderness/pain at the head of the penis and at one point a rash on the buttocks).

Hi "Jeremy"..... I agree, the topic of your HSV status does not need to be something you disclose too soon in a developing relationship..... get to know each other first....see how it's going and as it progresses, then the HSV issue will naturally need to be revealed.... it's my personal opinion though that before there is any sexual encounter you ought to disclose your HSV status.... I know some will disagree with me on this but, I think it is morally wrong not to disclose first.  This can be a make/break situation for most people but, again, I feel it is simply wrong not to give the other person the whole story since your decision not to disclose could put their health at risk.... that is simply not an option in my opinion.  Looking back to my "pre-HSV" life I most certainly would want my partner to disclose their HSV+ status before intimacy so that I could make my decision as to whether I want to take that risk or not....

Thanks, CHT. I appreciate the feedback. The whole trauma of going through this has led me to figure out a lot about myself and my attachment wounds, so I'm taking courses to come out of this better. This girl really was my dream woman in so many ways, it's been the hardest heartbreak to deal with ever. I'm truly in a lot of pain, but using the pain as fuel to launch that new business and work with coaches. I also opened up to my family about HSV, so my parents and sister know now, and they were very loving and accepting of it. Since opening up about it, I feel way better around this thing. After opening up, I also found out that some mutual friends in our family have discordant couples who are married with children, so HSV hasn't stopped them from living a loving life. The thing is... all of these couples I mention did not disclose until 6-8 months into the relationship. So now I'm thinking it might be better not to disclose until I know things are very serious. I'll of course stay on the medication and use protection, but maybe this is a better route than disclosing upfront and scaring women off.

Hey @Lcj987 and welcome to the website. You can be sure that isn't HSV-2, looks nothing like it. It is much more likely to be folliculitis or inflamed fordyce spots.
