So i thought i had genital herpes and i still might, my doctor said i did but my blood test came back negative. i had all the symptoms and have been taking the medicine and feel much better. but now idk what to do. so i’m not going to know my results for a little while because of the swab and the person i’m alsmot positive gave it to me is my boyfriend of 3 months. there’s no way i could’ve got it anyway else on my genatils. but i don’t know what can cause what meaning can i have oral sex with him? i wouldn’t let me to me but i would to him and i’m confused if i should or not

It takes up to 3 months to produce enough antibodies to detect on a blood test.  Did you get a swab taken?  You will want to know the type.

Your BF should get blood tested.  It's common for the person newly acquired HSV to test negative and the source partner to test positive.  He may be asymptomatic carrier or he could have passed his oral infection to your genitals.

Either way if he also has the same strand you can continue to have a normal sex life as you can't re-give him a virus he already has.  I wouldn't engage while sores are healing but other than that knock your socks off!

  • 4 weeks later...

Is that accurate ? 3 months for antibodies to show up  for Hsv1 and Hsv2?   Because  I  had a positive  swab for hsv1 had the blood test 15 days later and my Hsv1 came back positive.

It can come much sooner than 3 months.  But I would suspect 15 days is far too early and may represent a longer standing infection (longer than 15 days).

A swab can show positive as soon as a sore is found.

The swab was positive  for HSV1 and blood test was positive  for HSV1 and negative  for HSV2

Tested again and now HSV2  igg

Said positive 1.96... no new exposure... can this be a false positive?

The probability of hsv2 being a false positive in this range is high.  However if this is a new infection it may have just turned positive.

I would detest in 4 weeks and see what the value is.  If hsv2 stays in that low range (under 3) I would presume it to be false positive.  If it goes higher may be a new infection.

Only way to tell for sure after that would be to do a western blot.

WHy for just HSV1?   It’s clear you have HSV1 from the swab

i would retest for hsv2 only.  It may still be in that low positive range (under 4).  If so it’s probably hsv1 interaction with the HSV 2 test

Then the only way to know for sure would be a western blot or a swan of the lesion that came positive for HSV2.
