I have hsv 2 and he has hsv 1 both gential.  We met 2 years ago have not had intercourse but her performs oral on me several times.  He now wants me to perform oral on him but Im scared and dont feel comfortable.  He is determined you can not pass gential herpes to the mouth.  Is it possible to get oral herpes from having oral sex?

Although it is possible, you having a HSV-2 infection provides you with a lot of protection from obtaining a HSV-1 infection.

For whatever reason, it is a very rare event. Remember that HSV-1 rarely sheds in the necessary volume from the genital area as well.

How does that account for those who are positive for both ?

Hey @RNY18

For whatever reasons, HSV-1 appears to provide limited protection if any to a subsequent HSV-2 infection.

However the immune response for HSV-2 has been observed to provide significant protection from a HSV-1 infection.

Thise with both types have almost invariably been infected with HSV-1 before HSV-2.

somewhat related:

How much shedding is going for a male who hasn't had an  HSV2 OB in 1 year? I got it 2 years ago, and have abstained from sex the whole time. But recently I just had my first unprotected sex (which I never do, even when I caught it I was wearing a condom). I don't drink much, and ended up drinking one night, and invited a girl back to my place. She began oral sex on me and in a flash she was on me w/ no clothes going at it. I failed to push her off me.

Now I fear I may have passed it on to this person whom I haven't seen again, but could always run into her. I feel awful.

Any opinions ?

took the blood tests too early (whilte ago) - my primary thinks it 2 -  but really I need to do another test.  I'm here in the USA with good insurance, should I do the IgG, or the western blot ?

@RSL888 the IgG test would be a good place to start.

The Westernblot is way more expensive and is usually only required with low credible results from the IgG such as a low positive.

thanks, it seems hard to find a place in the States to get it anyway.

@WilsoInAus Can you illuminate on the subject of shedding for a male who hasn't had an OB in a year?

thanks

Shedding rates are all about measurement of viral copies on the person. This is not really relevant as:

- shedding has to take place in appropriate areas that come into contact

- shedding has to be of sufficient quantity to infect someone which happens only a small proportion of the shedding episodes.

What is more important is the probability of transmission. Male to an uninfected female is about 8% per annum (avoiding outbreaks), that is an 8% chance after a year of sex the female will be infected. Regardless of how many different PCR swab designed tests are applied to detect when and where and how much virus sheds, the transmission rate will be this on the average.

No reason to believe this will not apply to you now.

Condoms are awesome protection for a female, I appreciate that you were condom protect when infected hence you are more likely to shed at the infection site, but the penis is the most sensitive area nerve and skin wise not to mention the part of you that has the most contact.

Add antivirals to the mix and you have a much reduced chance. There are studies where couples using condoms and antivirals with thousands upon thousands of sexual episodes between them and no infection.

All you really need to know is Murphy's Law. If there is any chance then Murphy's law applies. Military nuclear aviation ordinance training 101.

Omg you crack me up. Being reckless is sleeping with a condom and not having any other sexy foreplay before just in case? This was not a random dude I just met at the bar that night, he had been talking to me for 3 months before.  The lawyer was reckless for not disclosing or taking antivirals or whatever. I trusted him for being so nice to me.

How could I have gotten hsv1 on my genitals as a child??? I’ve never had a coldsore either in my life. My body changed after I had sex with that idiot, which sucked  and it’s not pointless to know who did this to you when in some states it’s considered a crime to transmit an std to another person.

its very very very hard to know who gave it to you..my drs told me is pointless. and to come back positive for hsv1 on blood test, its alsaw kind of dumb because most people get it as children, and they dont have any outbreak..so could be the lawyer..or not...

I am in a similar situation. I experience the dizziness every day. I feel fatigued most of my day. I get tiny cuts in the genital area and lips. I get burning/tiny red dots in the genital area. I get tingling sensations in different areas. Valocyclavir did not work for me. I have a tiny, white bump on my lip that crusted over. All tests (no Western Blot) have been negative. Blood work is negative. This all started after I had unprotected sex.   What are your oral outbreaks like?
