I was give valtrex it didn't work i thought it was a yeast infection but that treatment didn't work either..my doc said i had a bacterial infection that treatment didn't work either. Now i am going to a gyno and thats not for anoth 3 weeks. now my question is is it normal to have herpes for so long and have no trouble and then all of a sudden this and has it been this painful for anyone else...i don;t know where else to turn so please if you have any advice.

Hi,

Just like your doctor said... it sounds like bacterial infection.

One time, my sore was really swollen and it hurt also. My doctor gave me antibiotic cream. Because of the infection, it lasted longer than usual.

But still..... it was less than 3 weeks though..

You've been having herpes for 8 years and now start having the severe symptom. Probably, your immune system is weak now. Taking Vitamins and other supplements may help to boost your immune. That will help to reduce the frequency of outbreaks and make the symptom milder in the future.

But the pain you have now.....mmm....

Only the sore hurts? Or more like neuralgia all over the body ...?

If it's the latter one,.... lovely79 (member of this forum) was suffering from pain for a long time(in her case, only pain. no visible outbreak)... I'm not sure if she's still having the pain or not... but... she may have some info about it..

But.... like I said, to me it sounds like bacterial infection. Maybe a bad one. If so... I think it will heal soon as you take medicine ( did the doctor give you any antibiotic.. like doxycycline or something...?)

Sorry... this is all I know...

Best wishes..

Faith

For the pain, some girls use dermaplast spray to make the sore numb, ... but some complain that it hurts more when use it. I've never used it, so I can't really comment about it.

Valtrex is not a pain killer or antibiotic. So it doesn't heal the sore. When the sore is infected with bacteria really bad, some doctors prescribe antibiotic (not cream) for you to take though...

But since you just started having bad outbreaks, you may be experirencing the same thing as others who are at their initial outbreak.

In that case, the sore may stay there longer than usual.....

But... hang in there..

And I think it'll heal a little by little, but if it gets worse, go see a doctor again, ok?

Just don't worry.... your symptom doesn't sound bizarre at all. Sounds kind of reasonable....

OK? Don't worry........<smile>

Hi,

I've never taken Valtrex. Only Zovirax.

The sore can stay after finishing valtrex, that's normal.

Antivirals like valtrex, zoviraz, etc. are for keeping the virus from making copies and speading to new sells. It has it's own purpose to take it.

Some people never experience any symptom for long time. I've heard that many times. It's really possible...

Hi Poor me,

Hmmm,

You said that you've had herpes for 8 years. 8 years ago did you have an outbreak, how did they diagnose you?

I think it's possible for you to all of a sudden start getting outbreaks even if it's only been 8 years. In some people it lays dormant for long periods while in others they may have an outbreak every two weeks. Have you been sick lately? There is a killer Flu going around this year. If you have anything that lowers your immune system at any time your bodys defenses will let the virus slip through.

For example, Chicken Pox. We all get (or we all did get) chicken pox when we are little, after the sores go away, the virus goes up into our spine and lays dormant. At any time it can come out again and that's what is known as shingles. Shingles can happen to anyone that has had the chicken pox. So if herpes is laying dormant even for 8 years it can pop out (so to speak) at any time.

I think the most common reason for outbreaks is a lowered immune system. When you're tired, when you get a sunburn, when you're stressed-this all lowers immune system, which can trigger an outbreak.

Maybe you've just been under a lot of stress.

As for me I don't think Valtrex works. I've been on it for three months straight. It however could be working and just stopping the actual sores from coming out. I just found out three months ago so it could be that I am stressing way too much about it.

I have had pain since July/August. Pretty non-stop, except for the last two weeks....THANK GOD! I don't get any sores, never have. My glands are swollen still. My doctors can't tell me the reason for my pain or my glands. She said that it's just not normal with HSV to be non-stop.

So I don't know. I'm just taking it day by day, praying for no more pain......but I have hope that it gets better.

I got off the subject. Yes, I think it's definitly true that you can get an outbreak after 8 years. I'm sure it's perfectly normal seeing as though if you have it it's just laying dormant and just waiting for those little soldiers(your immune system) to step away from the door to get through.

Try some lysine, vitamins, and yogurt. It seems to work for many.

well iam glad to hear that i am not the only one in pain i geuss the old saying is true...missery loves company...although i am sorry to hear that you have been in pain for so long.

To answer you ? Lovely i was diagnosed at a walk in clinic after i found out my boyfriend cheated on me with a well known town skank ..and other people contracted it ..i had one sore. I wasn't really bothered that i had it because it never caused me any pain the only out breaks that i have had were one sore and always in the same spot..except for recentlyof course.

so i have another question does your pain prevent you from having sex...because for me it has and it has been a long .....long month. But the pain does seem to be going away.Another question i have is.. was your period screwed up while you had your break outs because last month i had it for one dy and also this month 2 days which is very abnormal for me seeing as i usually have it for 6-7 days. well i've blabbed for long enough that you both for your help.

Hi Poor me,

About your period and outbreak....

Period shouldn't be irregular because of herpes outbreak. But it may be now, because your body is not used to the outbreaks, yet. It's still in shock, and as you know.. period can be affected by emotional things and physical condition. It should go back to normal as your body get used to this virus.

Hang in there...

I've been having HSV-2 about 8 and a half years. Although, I don't have so much severe symptom like I used to do in the beginning, I sometimes get outbreaks continuously.

I don't remember the exact date ( I wrote it in here though), but in the end of the last year, I had 4 outbreaks in a row, just continuously. And last night, I started feeling the pain down there, and before I went to bed, I found one bump (outbreak). ( gosh! This time, it's itchy as hell!!)

I tend to get a lot of outbreaks in the winter. I think this cold weather is putting so much stress on me physically. ( I wanna move to Hawaii!!!!!! :D)

Different things trigger each person's outbreak. In my case, ... it used to be sunlight in the beginning. But now, stress (mental) is No.1 trigger to me. Everytime I get emotional about something and cry,.... a couple of days later, ...outbreak! Then.. catching cold, physical stress, eating lots of sweet, alcohol, and period.... they trigger my outbreak, too.

Try to relax as much as you can. I know it's a very stressful time for you right now, but stress has got a lot to do with outbreak. So just try not to think too much about herpes... I think that'll help a lot.

And dryness....... I've never experienced the dryness....

But where the sore was before, is very sensitive. Skin is thinner. Bleeding may occur, because that's the place that is constantly rubbed with underwear and everything..

I’m going to force him to get tested ! Thanks for your help !

@EssenceL25 there really isn't a question mark around the source, it's your latest partner. The median time from infection to an outbreak of lesions upon initial infection is 4 days.  The only thing that isn't certain is the type I suggest.
    • EssenceL25
I asked if it was hsv 1 or 2 and the doctor said it was Hsv2. I’m not sure i just asked him when he was tested last he said this year I said I think we should go test together and he agreed . I’m going to bring it up again cause I really need to know if he gave this to me I wasn’t sure since it was so close to my previous relationship.

@EssenceL25 then it is all beyond reasonable doubt that the current partner is the source. A 'perfect' fit in terms of timing, symptoms and swab. It may be though that the type is not technically known. Culture swabs are very often not typed and just assumed to be HSV-2 if taken from a genital location. If you received oral sex in the days leading into 7 March then it is 50/50 as to whether this is HSV-1 or HSV-2. You could contact your doctor and confirm if the swab was actually typed (which is a second test where fluorescent antibodies for HSV-1 and HSV-2 are added and see which one 'glows').  If that test wasn't done then you do not know type. If you have oral HSV-1 yourself (cold sores) then this will be HSV-2. Does your partner have oral HSV-1? It is somewhat strange for him not to rush and test - many people have a 'reaction' if they truly do not know their status and have concerns that you infected them etc. (not initially rational of course). This indicates he may know his status - or maybe he just isn't simply the sharpest tool in the shed!?

I had flu like symptoms and ulcers on my vagina . They did a culture and I tested positive for hsv2. I asked my partner to get tested he agreed but I’m not sure if he will cause he hasn’t said anything else about it.
