My Results & F**** that IgM Test!!

Two reasons for my post – my results and IgM testing.

First and foremost – I retested at week 12 after testing positive IgM at 5 weeks(negative IgG). It was just a general STD check - I had no reason to believe I had HSV as I not once presented with a sore/lesion/pain of any sort. Doctor diagnosed me with herpes and I’ve lived emotionally distressed for 7 weeks but after my re-test I am happy to say.......... my results came back NEGATIVE IGG!!! The joy I’m feeling now is indescribable.

I write this post to re-emphasise that IgM testing is completely USELESS!! For anyone testing, please do not request the IgM – it will get you into more trouble than what it’s worth! If your doctor happens to order the test, please ignore it whether it gives a negative, equivocal or positive result. I say this because the mental trauma I went through after the doctor diagnosed me based on this was absolutely horrible. I was scared of my own body, I was scared of living!!! If I did not question or do my own research on IgM testing, I probably would have continued living my life thinking I have herpes.

If you are ever diagnosed based on an IgM – get yourself another doctor! I did and my second doc immediately questioned my results, strongly believed it was a false positive and supported me for the next 7 weeks. He even conducted swabs on red spots he told me that ‘is definitely not herpes’ – he still swabbed because he knew it would bring me peace of mind.

IgM testing does not work for herpes the way it does for other diseases/infections. If IgM was reliable, it would have shown in my system approximately 10 days after exposure, lasted 2-3 weeks and slowly disappear. Instead, I got equivocal on the 21st March, positive 14.5 weeks later and now after having relations with 2 new partners (March to May), I am still negative for IgG. No symptoms apart from red irritated spots which I had them all swabbed because I freaked out – all were negative!

A lot of my research on IgM came from Terri Warren, Dr Handsfield Hunter, Dr Edward Hook and Dr Jen Gunter – all who loathe the IgM test because of how unreliable it is. I also had a lot of support and knowledge shared from people on this forum and from another forum – most of who said the IgM is useless and that they were confident I would remain negative (you guys were right, yay!)

To be honest, I might re-test again at 6 months for an extra level of certainty. But it is my understanding that 12 weeks is rather conclusive especially for someone who has never been exposed to either HSV1 or HSV2 in the past and well, I've never had a symptom reflective of herpes...

Anyway, I wish everyone all the best no matter where your at with your diagnosis and I thank you all for your support. I hope this post stops at least one person from testing via IgM and saves them the emotional trauma I and many others have gone through for absolutely no reason at all.

P.s sorry for overreacting in some of my posts lol :P

Awesome @Roxanne11 and thank you so much for returning to the website to impart your outcome for the benefit of others. You teach us all quite a lot with the way you have handled yourself and shared your experience.

It is very difficult to disbelieve doctors who you have trusted on many other issues. They're human an not trained or experienced in all aspects of all conditions. Luckily those that know what they are on about are worth their weight in gold; I'm glad you found a second doctor like this.

It was really smart of you to keep an open mind and respected the experts you list. They influence a lot of posts on this website.

Yes, but every married person who I found out about that has this waited 6-8 months into the relationship to disclose it. But maybe you're right. If I had told her 6-7 months in, she'd still have Googled it and flipped out, and maybe it would have been harder then. I don't know. I don't see myself going through this level of pain and rejection so easily next time. I really don't. I'm taking the meds. I use protection. It's been almost a decade since I've had it so I'm not worried about shedding or passing it on so easily. British studies confirm that the first 2 years are the most contagious and we're passed that. I'm just over this. I've never been in so much emotional pain in my life.

Is this herpes? I can’t find any pics that match this exactly and my symptoms don’t really match. I don’t have really any of the typical herpes symptoms other than pictured, so I figured it could be friction as I have recently been having a lot of sex with a new partner. Way more than normal. Started having unprotected sex about 3 - 4 weeks ago. These symptoms only started about 3-4 days ago. Felt burning in some areas and only some very few tiny red areas/spots appeared. Almost shiny in appearance. Seems to settle very quickly. They were only present for a day or so. Also had some very mild irritation after I pee but not during. This spot has 2 small red lumps that are now dry around the outside. It’s like it’s been rubbed off and the skin is dry and shiny underneath. It doesn’t seem to be lesion. There was no puss or any leakage, nor was the skin ever red under them. They also got better within a day or so. I still have red spots around but they are very small and not bunched together and some general discomfort but I feel it’s because I’ve touched it so much! Stressing a bit!  my research tells me friction burn/blister , Fungal ,herpes a bit of it all! I have no idea! Please help! Thanks in advance.

I’m going to force him to get tested ! Thanks for your help !

@EssenceL25 there really isn't a question mark around the source, it's your latest partner. The median time from infection to an outbreak of lesions upon initial infection is 4 days.  The only thing that isn't certain is the type I suggest.
