Painful urination duration with OB - how long?

Hi all,

Still trying to get a diagnosis after many months.  I am wondering if bad pain during urination within a week of exposure could clear up within a day or two for an initial OB, or if the bad pain would last much longer if it was an initial OB for someone who has never had HSV1 or 2. Docs said prostatitis or urethritis, but changed their minds after all urine tests came back negative for any bacterial infections. I've had other potential symptoms of HSV infection but I'd like to hear answers on this particular question from those that have confirmed GHSV cases. Thanks for any input.

Mine lasted around 7 days I think and  started about a week after exposure and only started getting better after being on anti virals for a few days. I had lots of herpes spots by day 5 after exposure  but they didn't start hurting when I peed until a couple of days after that. The pain is excruciating like I had to bite down on a towel when I peed to scream into it and I have a high pain threshold. Hope this helps but also remember everyone is different and some may clear up quicker than others

Edit* the outbreak lasted weeks but the bad pain whilst peeing lasted for around 1 week ( once the meds kicked in this stopped.

While everyone is different, from what I've read, initial outbreaks typically last 2-3 weeks. I was diagnosed during a routine GYN exam. My doctor ordered the standard blood draw, and I came up for HSV1/2. I was not having any symptoms at the time, but I was immediately brought to mind of something that had happened about 4 or 5 months prior. I had swollen lymph nodes, fever, and a sore on my vagina that, at the time, I thought was just an ingrown hair. In retrospect, that was probably my primary outbreak. About a year and a half ago, I had an outbreak that was gruesome, at least to me, I had internal and external blisters, and peeing was excruciating. Sometimes, as weird as it sounds, peeing in a bathtub of warm water helped a lot. Have you been tested for HSV? What are your other symptoms, and how long have they been presenting?

Thanks for the response.  I have been tested for HSV over and over for 5 months (IgM 1 time and IgG over 5 times) and been negative on everything, including a swab of a red rash and of an irritated urethral opening.  My very first symptom of anything was VERY painful urination that lasted about a day or two if I recall, followed a week or so later by a sore throat, chills, night sweats, and fatigue.  Things settled for maybe a few days, then came an extremely itchy anus/rectum with redness for weeks, itchy groin with no redness at all, then eventual red, itchy rash in groin and increase in redness on penile skin with mild itching. Never had a lesion or blister anywhere from what I've seen. Nothing seems to coincide with typical herpes, but herpes isn't always typical from what I've learned. Creams of all kinds from doctors are not helping at all.  I seem to have a new bug no one has ever come across (doubtful), or an atypical case of herpes or something similar.

Thanks. Did you experience general discomfort when urinating for quite a while after the excruciating part was done, or was it instantly over after the week with antivirals?

The pain was gone but I felt discomfort for around 10 months on and off to be honest. I always had a burning raw feeling down there but all the time, not just when I peed

Hmmm, yeah, it doesn't sound typical of Herpes, but I'm not a trained professional...have you been tested for all other STI/STDs?

Yes all of them, several times each, since the time you asked and I forgot to reply to this thread. I am about to request a biopsy of several parts of my groin, shaft, butt, you name it. I am so frustrated.

Hi "Jeremy"..... I agree, the topic of your HSV status does not need to be something you disclose too soon in a developing relationship..... get to know each other first....see how it's going and as it progresses, then the HSV issue will naturally need to be revealed.... it's my personal opinion though that before there is any sexual encounter you ought to disclose your HSV status.... I know some will disagree with me on this but, I think it is morally wrong not to disclose first.  This can be a make/break situation for most people but, again, I feel it is simply wrong not to give the other person the whole story since your decision not to disclose could put their health at risk.... that is simply not an option in my opinion.  Looking back to my "pre-HSV" life I most certainly would want my partner to disclose their HSV+ status before intimacy so that I could make my decision as to whether I want to take that risk or not....

Thanks, CHT. I appreciate the feedback. The whole trauma of going through this has led me to figure out a lot about myself and my attachment wounds, so I'm taking courses to come out of this better. This girl really was my dream woman in so many ways, it's been the hardest heartbreak to deal with ever. I'm truly in a lot of pain, but using the pain as fuel to launch that new business and work with coaches. I also opened up to my family about HSV, so my parents and sister know now, and they were very loving and accepting of it. Since opening up about it, I feel way better around this thing. After opening up, I also found out that some mutual friends in our family have discordant couples who are married with children, so HSV hasn't stopped them from living a loving life. The thing is... all of these couples I mention did not disclose until 6-8 months into the relationship. So now I'm thinking it might be better not to disclose until I know things are very serious. I'll of course stay on the medication and use protection, but maybe this is a better route than disclosing upfront and scaring women off.

Hey @Lcj987 and welcome to the website. You can be sure that isn't HSV-2, looks nothing like it. It is much more likely to be folliculitis or inflamed fordyce spots.

Hey @JackThrowAway herpes causes an outbreak where it enters the body first and maybe a progressive spread. If it doesn't cause an outbreak at the entry site then it won't cause one elsewhere, it also won't 'jump' upon infection - it would be more likely that the lesions are continuous from the penis to the anus. Nevertheless, testing trumps symptoms or any interpretation of symptoms. The correct conclusive result arises when: you have a positive swab; or An IgG HSV-2 level over 3.5 (Herpeselect test).

Slept with someone unprotected, roughly 2 weeks ago now. I felt generally unwell the couple of days after but I’d been drinking the whole weekend and didn’t have much sleep either of the days of that weekend so put it down to that. 6 days after I noticed these spots appear on the shaft of my penis. Along with symptoms of discomfort in my shaft in the couple of days prior to them appearing. No pain when urinating at all that I have noticed. They don’t hurt, itch or tingle and they don’t have fluid in from what I can see or feel if I squeeze them and have never burst? I went to a sexual health clinic to get checked up, they took bloods to do a full test and looked at the spots but said they saw nothing that concerned them but I’m not sure about that, any advice? The smaller spots under the shaft are just follicles I had diagnosed years ago and non-sti related.
