Newly Diagnosed and Looking for Advice: Two Outbreaks in Three Weeks

Hi,

I was very recently diagnosed with HSV-1 (just over two weeks ago) and I have had “two outbreaks” in that time. The initial outbreak happened three weeks ago and lasted about 8/9 days. It was extremely painful and I was very ill, unable to move or work and completely worn down. The blisters mainly disappeared but I still had some blemishes and discomfort so I knew my body was still fighting the virus off however, this then turned straight back into tingling, itching and then blisters again straight away. I don’t know if this is even classed as a recurrence because I never got completely over the first outbreak but I am so disheartened to have had it happen again immediately after the initial outbreak. The silver lining is that the blisters are smaller, fewer and significantly less painful.

In short, I had an outbreak immediately after my first outbreak and I want to know if this is normal to get two lots of blisters in one go?

Thank you so much for your time

K x

Hey @K1009 I can report that this is entirely consistent with a recent infection.

Your body can take a few months to generate and stabilise the immune responses. The outbreaks can be a bit unrelenting during this period. Your body will get in top of it.

Is this a genital outbreak from oral sex?

Hi

Thank you very much for your response. It is somewhat comforting but somewhat concerning to know it’s normal for me to have consistent outbreaks for a little while. I am worried at how this will effect my current relationship and just overall mood as it’s made me very irritable and weepy when I’m normally a relatively upbeat, easygoing person. Yes, it would appear so, my partner suffers with coldsores and we are usually very careful but I guess we just didn’t leave it long enough after an ob one time.

Hey @K1009 that all sounds a typical experience of transmission between partners. Please take heart, after the first few months, many people experience extremely few outbreaks of any with gHSV-1.

Also you cannot feasibly give this back to your partner, you are now concordant sexually in terms of HSV and your immune systems will protect you from further infection.

Thank you so much for taking the time out to talk to me, I’ve been reading horror stories of chronic outbreaks and I’ve scared myself silly. I guess the best thing now is to just stay positive and I wait out the next few months :) hopefully I’ll be back to myself in no time

I had outbreaks for the first 4 months but not bad ones compared to the first one and then I went 8 months without a single one. I've just recently had two but they were barely noticeable ( I felt a bit itchy and when I scratched I felt a bump which turned out to be a blister when I checked) I slapped a bit of coconut oil on and it was gone within the week. It does get easier!

Thank you for the much needed optimism! Were these outbreaks back to back or just frequent for the first few months if you don’t mind my asking? I’m just trying to gage what to expect really, my doctor made it sound like my body would clear out the virus in a couple of weeks and then I might get the occasional outbreak so I was really disheartened to have a back to back outbreak. I hadn’t heard of coconut oil being used before but it sounds like it’ll be a good investment :)

My first outbreak lasted about 3 weeks with new blisters emerging for over 10 days or so. I started with 2 and ended up with 30+ ( I stopped counting at around 32 lol). After that I had 1 a month for 3 months and it was usually around my period. I had severe itching and burning until 8 months in though and the coconut oil which I used from the start was so soothing! Going off the subject but coconut oil is awesome. I've just had a tooth out and got dry socket and I oil pulled with it and it started to heal the next day! I then used it on a painful mouth ulcer brought on by using clove oil on my dry socket and it started to heal it straight away. It's like magic! Lol. As your immune system gets used to the virus it will get easier and future outbreaks will most likely be barely noticeable.

That sounds like a pretty similar experience so far tbh, even down to the number haha glad to know it’ll get easier, I think I could manage it a little more if it wasn’t non-stop at the moment, it’d just be nice to have a breather! I will definitely be trying some coconut oil, I’m just using lidocaine at the moment but it’s not something I want to be using for months on end, especially cause it does burn a little. Coconut oil is amazing, what can’t it do??! Is there any particular one you use? I’m sure it all does the same but if it’s been tried and tested I’d sooner use that one. thank you so much for your help, I am very grateful

Good morning. My name is Marlena and I come from Poland. Sorry, my English is average. For two years I have been in a relationship with a man, for a year and a half I have been struggling with intimate problems. On average, my intimate condition is getting worse every month. Then I feel itching, redness, swelling around the entrance to the vagina, small blisters (not always). Most often it is only red and swollen, itches and then disappears. This state lasts 3-4 days. I come from a small town, doctors don't know what it is. They say it's 'skin irritation'. They prescribe moisturizing creams with lactic acid, probiotics. It doesn't help. I did a blood test for HSV on my own, which is very expensive in Poland, but it does not separate HSV1 from HSV2. The doctor, when he shows these results, says that it's not herpes, but irritation. I would like to add that in the past I suffered from herpes on the lips, then it was a 'scab'. There has never been a scab in an intimate area. Sometimes there are blisters that last 1-2 days, but not always. So what do high blood test results mean? I would like to add that in Poland people do not talk about the HSV virus. It's just that sometimes someone has it on their lips and that's it. Results translation: IgM HSV 1/2: questionable IgG HSV 1/2: result above the measuring range https://files.fm/f/4cpu7uee4

This is my first time posting here. Im generally pretty anxious when it comes to anything to do with health conditions etc. For context I have had jock itch and fungal infections previously on my buttcrack. I have had 0 new sexual partners and I am not concerned about my girlfriend cheating at all. 4 days ago my balls began itching and red pretty much all over, as you can see some general flakeyness and what looks to be a lesion I noticed on Monday when I checked them out. My partner and I do get cold sores from time to time so the anxious part of me is concerned this could be herpes, but at the same time could be some sort of fungal infection. My doctor cant see me until tomorrow so I just have to worry until then. There is no pain and nothing on the penis or anywhere else, just general itchiness. Any ideas if this is herpes or not?

Yes, but every married person who I found out about that has this waited 6-8 months into the relationship to disclose it. But maybe you're right. If I had told her 6-7 months in, she'd still have Googled it and flipped out, and maybe it would have been harder then. I don't know. I don't see myself going through this level of pain and rejection so easily next time. I really don't. I'm taking the meds. I use protection. It's been almost a decade since I've had it so I'm not worried about shedding or passing it on so easily. British studies confirm that the first 2 years are the most contagious and we're passed that. I'm just over this. I've never been in so much emotional pain in my life.
