First OB and horrible neck/head pain?

I got genital hsv1 back in March. I know it was my first exposure because I had a very painful outbreak that swabbed positive, and haven’t really had one since. I also had the worst flu like symptoms ever.... one of the symptoms I had was a bad headache in the back of my head, at the base of my skull.. I was afraid I had meningitis, but the pain stopped after I got better.. Unfortunately I think I recently passed the hsv virus to my new boyfriend. He had similar symptoms as me, but did not get it medically confirmed. He also had the same back of the head pain that I did, but his symptoms also passed.. is this symptom common? Even though we both feel fine now do we need to worry that we have herpes-encephalitis?
