PCR test for Herpes using blood sample.

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

As we know or read everywhere that 90% of people don't know about they have herpes because they don't get symptoms. If only IgG test getting positive and no symptoms then can we do the PCR test on blood sample?? As symptomless person can not be swabed specially male patient.

How accurate PCR test on blood. If someone took treatment by considering IgG positive, if he want to confirm if treatment working or not can be confirmed by PCR on blood??

After treatment as well IgG may take time to go negative but can we check virus DNA particles in blood using PCR??

I have read on Mayo clinic that PCR qualitative DNA on blood are effective test for herpes Virus.

Please share your opinion. If anyone did PCR on blood found positive?? Or PCR DNA on blood always comes negative??

Generally herpes doesn’t travel in the blood.   So I think PCR is reserved for those rare instances where the immune system doesn’t keep the virus in check.

HSV lives in the nerve cells so detecting the antibodies our body builds is the internal way of identifying it.

swab PCR is the best way to detect virus directly when it appears on the skin.  From the nerve.

For symptom less people we can not take swab. Do we have any other method of testing other than IgG. Because I think if no symptoms at all for a year or more. Even I didn't see first outbreak as well. I just did STD panel test as regular testing for precaution. All results negative except HSV1+HSV2 combined test is positive. I am even not sure which is positive i.e. 1 or 2.

Can Western blot gives actual results saying virus is there or not?? Because I don't believe on IgG it may come positive for lifelong. If no symptoms what I will treat?? Doctor also not giving any medicine in my case.

The most appropriate test is a swab of lesions to confirm type and location.

Next best is a type specific test for HSV-1 and HSV-2 (two separate tests and results). HSV-1 is potentially tricky, it is mostly oral, but also genital. HSV-2 is over 97% genital.

The type specific IgG test very often gives conclusive results. For most people no other test is required. Sometimes a Westernblot can sort out low positives.

Your body will produce IgG antibodies for your lifetime, or a very long time at least.

You have had a combined test. As you have not had any symptoms, all that can be derived at this point is that you probably have an oral HSV-1 infection. Many people with an oral HSV-1 infection have no living memory of symptoms such as lesions on their lips.

Most people do not need medication, especially for a childhood HSV-1 infection. As in your case, your body is all the treatment you need.
