Hello everyone,

I have get outbreaks roughly about 2-3 weeks a month. This has been going on every month for about a year and a half. I am fed up. Is there ANYTHING that helps you guys out with outbreaks?? Does Lysine really help? I take valacyclovir 2 times a day, and it does not prevent me from getting lesions. I have GHSV1. Someone please give me some advice!!!

I have type 2, but also had constant outbreaks... personally I didn’t find that lysine helped me, but a lot of people say that it helps them! If you have any other medical conditions make sure to check with your doctor before taking it. Personally, I love witch hazel...it doesn’t stop them from happening, but it helped relieve some of the constant annoying tingling I had as well as feel nice and soothing when applied to the sores. I found that they healed a bit faster when I used witch hazel.
I’m on suppressive therapy taking acyclovir (400mg x2 daily) which has worked incredibly well for me, I haven’t had any outbreaks since. Perhaps a change in medication might work for you? I didn’t find valacyclovir effective for me, and also had a terrrrrrible reaction - I was so bloated my stomach was hard to the touch (I have the stretch marks to prove it lol) and I could not pee. I would honestly just recommend keeping a dialogue going with your doctor! Different medication, maybe a different combination of meds, or perhaps they have other suggestions.

ps- I have a nurse friend who informed me that a lot of her patients have reported that the HPV vaccine helped reduce their symptoms

I have been having the same problem the past 7 months. Having a week or two of an outbreak constantly. I’ve had hsv for 3 years and the constant obs started this year. Not sure why. Also I don’t know if it’s one or two, I had an ob (had started days before so don’t think it was accurate) that I had swabbed come back negative. So I had blood drawn and both 1&2 came back as neg. but all these problems started a few days after sleeping with a specific guy that 3 years ago (I was diagnosed by my dr looking at it and starting me on antivirals). I was on valtrex for 2 years and suddenly had a 1.5 month long ob that wouldn’t go away so switched to acyclovir that worked for a year but now having an ob every month. Can’t figure out a trigger, they are just coming with no end 😔 it really is depressing. I’ve tried lysine intermittently but not consistently enough to know if it works. Hope we can find a solution soon. Take care.

@EssenceL25 there really isn't a question mark around the source, it's your latest partner. The median time from infection to an outbreak of lesions upon initial infection is 4 days.  The only thing that isn't certain is the type I suggest.

I asked if it was hsv 1 or 2 and the doctor said it was Hsv2. I’m not sure i just asked him when he was tested last he said this year I said I think we should go test together and he agreed . I’m going to bring it up again cause I really need to know if he gave this to me I wasn’t sure since it was so close to my previous relationship.

@EssenceL25 then it is all beyond reasonable doubt that the current partner is the source. A 'perfect' fit in terms of timing, symptoms and swab. It may be though that the type is not technically known. Culture swabs are very often not typed and just assumed to be HSV-2 if taken from a genital location. If you received oral sex in the days leading into 7 March then it is 50/50 as to whether this is HSV-1 or HSV-2. You could contact your doctor and confirm if the swab was actually typed (which is a second test where fluorescent antibodies for HSV-1 and HSV-2 are added and see which one 'glows').  If that test wasn't done then you do not know type. If you have oral HSV-1 yourself (cold sores) then this will be HSV-2. Does your partner have oral HSV-1? It is somewhat strange for him not to rush and test - many people have a 'reaction' if they truly do not know their status and have concerns that you infected them etc. (not initially rational of course). This indicates he may know his status - or maybe he just isn't simply the sharpest tool in the shed!?

I had flu like symptoms and ulcers on my vagina . They did a culture and I tested positive for hsv2. I asked my partner to get tested he agreed but I’m not sure if he will cause he hasn’t said anything else about it.
