How reliable is western blot?

Recommended Posts

Curiositykilledmycat

I just received my western blot results and they came back negative for both 1 and 2. I had an appt with my GYN this morning for other reasons and she also gave me a copy of the results. But she seemed skeptical about then and now it has me worrying again. I guess since its not that common of a test and its not a mandatory rule out test ordered if you come back with a low positive that she might feel that way? But im just curious if i should put all my trust in this test or is there still a possibility of me actually being positive?

@Curiositykilledmycat according to Terri Warren who has been heavily involved in many thousands of WB tests and research using the WB - the sensitivity for HSV-2 is 99.9%.

Your doctor is just a little surprised that a 2.6 on the IgG can be a true negative. Studies show that most certainly can be the case, your doc just hasn’t seen that many results ‘overturned’ by the WB.

Is there any known instances where the results were wrong? I just don’t wanna think im 100% good if im not

There are only a handful of known cases where the WB has missed an infection. These people have positively swabbed lesions.
