      Well, that's unusual, but not impossible. I've had HSV1 since childhood, and my IgG results will vary based on whether I'm taking anti-virals, but always have come out positive. I've known someone though who definitely had a cold sore, but never tested positive, so it's rare, but happens. It's possible he just carries a low count and transmitted to you via saliva but without direct oral sex, or that he doesn't have it and you had been a carrier for a long time and randomly had an outbreak right after having sex (unlikely), or some other random scenario. There's a reason why such a large part of the population is HSV1 positive - there are a lot of ways to get it, it's often asymptomatic, and most adults already have it. It's frustrating that we just don't have the resources to look deeply into these questions today. It seems like he's been pretty open to getting tested and hopefully educating himself along the way - that's at least something.

      It is so easy to stress over all kinds of symptoms, but generally speaking I'd say to trust your GP. They have the training, and they were there, so it's reasonable to believe them regarding your oral symptoms. I'd follow their advice and try to take care of yourself to be comforted and heal. In terms of your concerns about having Ghsv, a type-specific test for you and your partner can at lest tell whether either of you have a type I or II infection *somewhere*. The symptoms for hsv can be pretty variable and sometimes so mild that you wouldn't even notice, which holds true for men and women. If you don't have it, you can be thankful! If you do, you can be thankful the symptoms are so mild the possibility never even occurred to you until now! Remember that even if you have a positive test result of some kind, it's not conclusive where/when/by whom you might have been exposed. Just use the information you get to make informed decisions going forward. You're not alone no matter what the outcome, and every outcome is manageable. Be well

      normally for most people hsv is lips and genitals, not tongue. fear can make you afraid of every little thing that you did or did not ever notice before and now you have an excess of fear. tongue irritation can occur for many reasons, none of which i am qualified to discuss. i suggest not shaving genital areas, trim hairs, don't upset the skin.

      A- typical symtoms are rarer. It is less usual I think for a pimple to scab like that. But I am no pimple expert. Some people say if there is pus it isn’t but I think things out of spectrum can crop up with herpes. The likelihood of picking up herpes with condom use is low. Most of the mucus membranes for men is on the shaft of the penis. If the condom is used correctly and it was used during oral sex it’s highly unlikely. It’s too late to swab from what I personally know. Also I do not think symtoms on the bottom is common for men. Women tend to present with symtoms around the anus. I don’t know about men. Your situation sits out in a whole lot of unlikely and less than typical so I think you should put your weight of probabilities in the very unlikely and just follow up in the case of rare circumstances without worrying or becoming hysterical.

      So this is going to be a long one but please stick it out. I’ll be extremely grateful. So after going to my doctors for a general check up due to me having Molluscum (had during childhood, but reappeared when I was 19) he mentioned having a routine STD check. I thought nothing of it and accepted. Everything came back negative, syphillis, chlamydia, ghonnerea and HIV.  What I didn’t realise is that herpes wasn’t a routine test and I started looking online about what herpes involved. I was scared and uncertain about my status now beings as the more I read. The more symptoms I believe I’ve had. starting in 2018 I had developed iritis which apparently can be a result of H. This however was during a stressful period of my life.  Since my first sexual partner my posterior fourchette has always been weak and I have little tears (not serious) ever since. They heal within a day.  However. Whilst itchiness, blisters, soreness is the typical symptoms for when people have it (and I have never had) I have noticed that I have had a very very thin, not deep, none sore (unless touched) cut on my inner labia a few weeks ago.  Then three days ago I had a tiny tiny cut which resembled more of very thin tear I guess it closer to a definition, since the one on my labia was more of a cut ( but I would also say like a scratch) on the upper part of my genitals just where the pubic area ended. It was quite sore when touched but didn’t bother me otherwise. I have had this cut before however typically when my pubic hair is growing back. In around about the same area which goes away within 2-3 days maximum. Does this seem like genital herpes? further more, I now have concerns about my mouth too. This is the first time this has ever happened to me. And had occurred two days after I started panicking about this, so I would say I was extremely stressed. My tongue turned Pale and patchy with red indents on my tongue. Ulcers (eventhough they didn’t hurt) appeared on the back of the sides of my tongue. The sores then travelled all along the sides of my tongue to the tip of my tongue. (A few yellow patches still being on the back of either side of my tongue) Being in one place, then moving to another. I must say that I had smaller sores and then I had food poisoning which resulted in vomiting which then made the sores triple in amount. Also there are light yellow patches/dots on the back of my throat.  I have been using salt water rinses and bonjella on the sores. It’s important to note that the sores don’t hurt or irritate me UNLESS I use the bonjela which causes them to burn a little.  I have never had anything like this in my mouth before and this has lasted two weeks,  And I guess I’m just extremely upset because I’ve only had two sexual partners. And have been with my current partner for two years. So for all of this to suddenly occur has created so much stress for me. I’ve already told him that there is a possibility since I wanted to be open from the very beginning, but since the COVID scares, anywhere I could get the cuts on my genital swabbed is closed and it’s already gone now. So I’m hoping I could eat some advice here ..  when seeing my GP about my mouth she said it didnt look like herpes and was quite certain. She said it just looked like ulcers and said it could be down to the immense stress I’ve put myself under due to panicking. So... This sounded like one of those stories that does not seem true but it is legitimate. See quotes below and then link to the article below.

I too was skeptical at first, but this story is legit and is being republished all over the science community... Fascinating stuff. It would be the first antiviral with a virucide mechanism... as lethal to viruses as bleach but as harmless to humans as well... Sugar. Resistance would be a thing of the past. Itd be a total game changer. Shame that they're still so early in the process

This new development from a collaborative team of international scientists shows promise for the treatment of herpes simplex (cold sore virus), respiratory syncytial virus, hepatitis C, HIV, and Zika virus to name a few. The team have demonstrated success treating a range of viruses in the lab – including respiratory infections to genital herpes.

Developing virucides from sugar has allowed for the advent of a new type of antiviral drug, which destroys viruses yet is non-toxic to humans.

Current antiviral drugs work by inhibiting virus growth, but they are not always reliable as viruses can mutate and become resistant to these treatments.

Using modified sugar molecules the team showed that the outer shell of a virus can be disrupted, thereby destroying the infectious particles on contact, as oppose to simply restricting its growth. This new approach has also been shown to defend against drug resistance.

The antiviral mechanism is virucidal meaning that viruses struggle to develop resistance. Professor Caroline Tapparel from the University of Geneva and Prof Francesco Stellacci from EPFL were both also senior authors of the study. Prof Tapparel declared: “We developed a powerful molecule able to work against very different viruses, therefore, we think this could be game changing also for emerging infections.”

The molecule is patented and a spin-out company is being set up to continue pushing this new antiviral towards real-world use. With further testing the treatment could find a use in creams, ointments and nasal sprays or other similar treatments for viral infections. This exciting new material can work to break down multiple viruses making for cost-effective new treatments even for resistant viruses.

Does anyone have any idea how this might be used?  Topical?  Pill?  If a pill and taken daily, a suppressive?   I know—lots of questions.

I assume topical.. It's a molecule that kills the virus on contact. If it passes through the stomach, the molecule will probably be altered and/or it cannot reach the skin.

I think that the advantage is mainly on cost effectiveness and lower chances of spreading an infection if the virucide is applied.

But they didn't even do applications on skin, so the efficacy on the outbreaks of a person is still to be verified.

I see it more like a non-prescription drug as abreva, acyclovir cream & co..

I believe this may be interesting for the researchers working on 'prime and pull'.

Whoa! So I just read through the official publication, in short, this finding may definitely change everything we know about the viral challenge in the human body. Given this is a "natural" molecule it is not impossible to develop and in-vivo model. This is very exciting in that it most definitely could fly right through clinical trials because of its natural properties! This is the best news I've heard regarding a treatment for HSV especially since the study seems to focus on HSV2 quite a bit. Thank you! Great find OP!

Hi @@lw@ys, could you help to link the official publication you mentioned? So that others who are interested can have a read too.

I am happy to read about this sugar-based antiviral. If this works then it sounds like this antiviral can be a blueprint to create meds for other viruses as well.

If this is to be used as a cure, then the challenge is to develop mechanism to target  and deliver to cells with HSV.

Not sure how it is going to turn out. Hopefully on good side.

Just to be clear, my understanding of latent HSV is that it's a sequence of DNA within the nucleus that that gets unwound under certain circumstances, expresses itself, and causes the cell to generate of HSV. Consequently, the only way to destroy latent HSV is through destroying the host neuron(s), or snipping the DNA sequence out of the neuron. Consequently, a molecule can be "antiviral", and still not be able to remove latent HSV. Someone correct me if I am wrong here.

If you mean the DNA integrates with the cell's DNA, then no, it's extrachromosomal.  To destroy the latent virus you would never want to destroy the neuron. One way to destroy the viral DNA is to use something like a gene editor that can snip the viral DNA at certain locations, thus disabling it permanently. That's what Dr. Jerome is doing at FHC. He's been very successful. He's the only one I know of that has been able to destroy the latent virus.

He hasn't been totally successful because he hasn't been fully successful delivering the gene editor to the neuron. But he thinks he knows how to do that. Currently, he has been able to eliminate 90% of the latent virus from one ganglion (i.e. nerve bundle) but only 50% from another. He uses AAVs to deliver the editor. He now knows that one type of AAV is good at delivering to one ganglion but not a different ganglion. So he needs to find the right AAVs for the different ganglion to achieve efficient delivery to to those ganglion. The editor itself, once inside the neuron, appears to do the job. His success has been in mice and he is now, or soon will be, working with guinea pigs.

I would assume and I am no scientist that the viral "store" would empty after so many times. Of course we do not know for sure but it seems to be a great approach next to gene editing or better yet a vaccine that actually works. @StayStrongOk here is what you asked for

Certainly it would help reduce viral load with other immune boosting strategies fingers crossed.
