Constant coldsores

Recommended Posts

FrankBooth

Im 24 and for the past 2 years I have been utterly plagued with cold sores. I am unemployed - what business would hire or keep someone with constant cold sores? I hav'nt seen any of my friends in the past 2 months because I am to ashamed to go out and been seen this way. I eat Lysine tablets like candy, and I take acyclovir. I have used Abreva, and Zovirax neither of which help. The abreva is $10 a tube and the Zovirax well its $50 and its slightly bigger than a tube of abreva yet half of the tube is filled with air. I am very careful not to eat chocolate or peanuts yet I cannot get rid of these things. My life is completely miserable and I do not know what to do anymore. I should have a job, I should be saving to buy my own home but im not, I cant, I just stay locked up at my parents house cursing God. What else can I do? My doctor didn't even want to give me the acyclovir because he said "they dont usually prescribe that for cold sores". There has to be some other underlying issue that is causing me to get so many cold sores. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Compile a list of all the foods that you are eating. Your diet might be causing your problems. Avoiding two problem foods does not mean that you are getting good nutrition or maybe consuming other foods that might be triggering outbreaks.

Are you taking vitamin supplements? Many men are deficient in the B vitamins, which are important for immune system function amongst other things.

Popping lysine tablets is not a solution to cold sores or any herpes outbreaks. Lysine competes with arginine for entry into cells. Arginine is related to the replication of the herpes virus. However, arginine is not an amino acid that you should just cut out! It serves many important physiological functions, including immune response and healing! If you are ODing on lysine, this might be causing more problems than solving them. The idea is to get a healthy balance between arginine and lysine. This is why usually lysine is taken in controlled dosages or after eating food that is rich in arginine.

Maybe you might want to get another doctor who can look into getting you a better prescription as well to control symptoms. However, your immune system is not being effective, which is where you need to focus on primarily.

Hey Frankbooth. I was really sad to see your post. I know ecactly how you feel. I would get a second opinion from a doctor. There has to be more you can do...! Just know that you are not alone and beautiful no matter what. :)

Yeah and the stigma hit me pretty hard since I'm originally from Asia and we don't have sex ed or STD education so the regret and self-hating are as bad as stigma. Hoping is the only way to get me out of suicidal thoughts. I know that a lot has been done and I'm glad. I just hope they continue with the hsv research instead of abandoning it cuz it's not life-threatening and I also hope that the big pharma conspiracy isn't real.

Thx so much. However HSV can affect the trigeminal nerve/from post herpetic neuralgia and can actually cause all these symptoms. Some people, once affected can have short term symptoms,  while others have sporadic flare ups and some are permanently affected. Gabapentin for trigeminal neuralgia, prescribed by my neurologist, did help me for some time,  but I'm glad to be off it.  Hope my post helps someone w similar issues who havent gotten help from primary care Dr.

@Dvm you can be assured that HSV is not the cause of these issues. As you have found, it’s likely a spinal issue and it sounds like you have found some help. Stick with that.
