Hellp. I had an awful outbreak when I contracted hsv 2 from my ex bf. I had flu like symptoms and groin pain for about a week. It did get better for me. The first OB is always the worst. Hopefully you'll be able to get some antivirals. I live in the UK and I was offered some last month as I was having ob every month. They are working really well. I hope you are feeling better.

Kaylie, thank you for your response. I started on the antivirals and had horrible anxiety and nightmares with them. Not sire if this is a normal side effect or not. How did you respond to them? Any weird side effects? I switched to the topical form of them. Hopefully it works!

Hi tina.... which antiviral did you try?  I've not heard of anyone having anxiety and nightmares as a result of antiviral med..... did you report this to your doctor?  Did he/she prescribe a different antiviral to see if that helps?  I take valacyclovir once a day and have never had any side effects.  I also use acyclovir ointment (Zovirax) when I do have an outbreak and I find it definitely helps clear things up quickly.   Kaylie is correct, the outbreaks typically get less severe as time goes on.... many people report having few if any outbreaks as the years pass.... it gets better!  Fingers crossed on multiple vaccines and new drugs being tested right now.... let's hope medical science finds a way to put an end to this virus soon!     take care.

@tina7272i hope you have a better time with this new antivirals. I haven't had any side effects on mine. I have aciclovir 400 mg. See how your new ones go. Try and eat a arginine diet. No chocolate (yep it's hard) no nuts no caffeine limit alcohol and try and find boosting vitamins for your immune system. Get lots of sleep. They are my key OB rules.

You guys are amazing!! Definitely gives me hope! I tried Valtrex. I did call my dr and they told me to stop it. They called in the topical, but it burns soooooo bad. Its making the lesions fire engine red. Is that normal??

hmmmmm, is the topical they gave you Zovirax?  Is it in the ointment or lotion form?  I've never had any burning from using zovirax.... actually it helps everything calm down and soothes the outbreak.... also, instead of valtrex did they suggest you try famciclovir instead?  you might want to ask...it's another good antiviral for HSV

@Kata33 what do you mean by odd sensation when passing urine?  If I may ask where was location of your outbreak?

@CHTJust a positive result, no numbers were mentioned, no suggestion of another test. Why would these be important? Sores all healed, feeling better each day, though I still have some residual soreness, odd sensations when passing urine etc, and I get tired/achy if I'm too active. But it's only been two weeks, so I guess that's to be expected? Thank you so much for all if your responses, it is so much appreciated!

Hi Kata.... sorry for the not so good news....I believe you said it was a swab test, correct?  Did the results come with a number or just a "positive" for HSV2?  Did your doctor suggest taking an IgG antibody test at some point?   Are you doing okay?

I wrote it for you, your wife and all viewers struggling with hsv. Since you don’t know much about hsv, and many believe it is mild. It is definitely not mild for many people, usually women suffer the worst. It’s good to learn from veterans who have researched this topic for years.
