My husband has hsv2 I was starting to give him oral when I saw it, and told him. Could I be at risk of getting hsv1? Also, if he has hsv2 could he have hsv1 also and not know it yet? Or is it one or the other? My dr. says I should just wait and see if I get an ob. cuz it would be to soon for the test to show. My husband just had his first one this wk and is barely healing. I am trying to learn as much of this virus as I can for him now but also for me in the future. Doesn't hurt to read and learn. How long does he need to wait before any sexual activity can even be thought of?

I don't think there are alot of cases of having both HSV-1 and 2. I might be wrong here.

I think your confusion is about the virus types. Hope this helps:

HSV-1 prefers to infect around the mouth

HSV-2 prefers to infect around genitals

HOWEVER, You CAN catch HSV-1 or 2 from mouth infection to genital - genital infection to genital or genital infection to mouth. It does not change the type because of the location of infection. If he only has HSV-2, then you are only at risk for HSV-2, but it can end up being either genital or oral.

When the virus type infects an area that is not its "preferred" location, it can have less symptoms and not be as strong.

Your doctor is right. No sense sweating it until you show symptoms or it has been long enough to get blood work.

Hi graceaz,

It is advisable to not have sex when he feels an outbreak is coming on until at least a week after the sores have healed.

Since this is his first it could take some time to get to know what he's actually experiencing and in time his immune system should fight it more effectively. Hope he gets over it soon.

Use Purell before and after

Cleanliness helps. Have him use Purell before and after sex. You too. You can also use a lubricant like KY that has a spermicide in it that will kill the virus. He can apply this to his genital area before and you do this too. You may also find that this enhances your experience as well.

PesPes, there is no cure. You can treat symptoms and try to prevent outbreaks, but you will always have the virus and be able to pass it along. There is NO CURE at this point.

Based on the sheet below, it would be around 10% per year without condoms with no active outbreaks. With condoms, 5.2% and condoms and antiviral therapy combined around 1.5-2.5%  https://herpesopportunity.com/downloads/herpes-opportunity-disclosure-handout.pdf

So is there anyone that has tried this for which Valtrex/Acyclovir/Famvir doesn't work and have constant symptoms and problems?   It's expensive but if like 1 pill a week would work it would be worth it.....Trying to figure out if this works for people that the current AV's don't...
